Frequently asked questions

How many chess tournaments are there in Catalonia?

Right now there are 78 upcoming and 1 under way. The list is rebuilt every day from official sources, and each entry carries the dates, the venue, the time control and, when the organiser publishes it, the number of entrants.

How do I enter a chess tournament?

Entries are always handled by the organiser, never by EloCheck. Every tournament has a «Details» link to its official page, which is where the regulations, the fee, the deadline and the entry form live. If the regulations are not out yet, the link takes you to the organiser's site.

What does FIDE-rated mean?

That results are reported to FIDE and move your international rating up or down. The organiser has to register the tournament in advance and the arbiter must be qualified. In the calendar these tournaments carry the FIDE tag; those counting only towards the national rating carry their own.

What is the difference between classical, rapid and blitz?

The time control. In classical each player gets an hour or more per game (say 90 minutes plus 30 seconds a move); in rapid, between 10 and 60 minutes; in blitz, under 10, typically 3+2 or 5+3. FIDE keeps a separate rating list for each of the three.

When do new tournaments show up in the calendar?

Every day. We check the official sources daily and new tournaments appear as soon as the organiser announces them. Federations tend to publish the bulk of the season over the summer, and FIDE's international calendar is refreshed at the start of each month.
