How EloGuess works

For every position, Stockfish has already given its verdict: a number from +2.5 (White is winning) to −2.5 (Black is winning), with 0 for a balanced game. Your job is to guess that number by moving the slider. The closer you land, the more points you score.

This is not about counting pieces. What you have to judge is everything the material count leaves out: piece activity, king safety and pawn structure. That is why it trains positional understanding rather than tactical vision.

Every game is a real over-the-board game from the EloCheck database: named players, real tournaments, real dates. Under each position you will find who played it and where.

Frequently asked questions

What does +1.5 mean in Stockfish?

In Stockfish, +1.5 means White holds an advantage worth about a pawn and a half. The sign tells you who stands better —positive for White, negative for Black— and the number tells you how large the advantage is. A 0.0 is a balanced position.

How can I train positional evaluation?

By looking at a position, committing to a number before you see the answer, and comparing it straight away with what an engine says. EloGuess is built for exactly that: 216.409 chess positions where you give your evaluation with a slider and instantly see Stockfish's and how far off you were.

What is the difference between tactics and positional evaluation?

Tactics means finding the concrete move that wins by force; positional evaluation means judging who stands better and by how much when there is no immediate shot. A player can be good at solving tactics and still be unable to say whether a quiet position is level or lost.

How is a chess position evaluated?

A chess engine explores millions of possible continuations and translates the best one into a number measured in pawns. EloGuess evaluations come from Stockfish 18, computed at depth 22 with three lines.

Can I train with real tournament games?

Yes. Every EloGuess position comes from a real over-the-board game, with player, tournament and date attached: no online games and no invented positions. On each position you can see who played it and where.

How many positions does EloGuess have?

EloGuess has 216.409 positions verified with Stockfish, and the number grows with every new batch. Each game uses ten of them, so you can play for many days without repeating one.

How does the ×2 combo work?

Nail a position (100 points) and the combo is armed: the NEXT position is worth double. You'll see a golden ×2 on the scoreboard while it's live. The combo never goes beyond ×2 — nail two in a row and the second already pays double while arming ×2 for the third. And nailing it means landing within ±0.1 of Stockfish: below that gap, engines don't even agree with each other.
